Message from Ruth Simons re:- "White Bridge"
Dear all,
Park staff are waiting for information from the City of Lincoln Council repairs and maintenance division as to when repairs will take place.
When we have more information this will be posted at the location.
If the bridge is damaged further in the meantime then we will close it immediately.
If that happens then the timescale of re-opening (if indeed that is possible) will no doubt be much longer.
We have kept the Lincolnshire County Council Rights of Way officers informed and they agree that the intended action is appropriate.
We have no further information for you at this time.
Kind Regards
Ruth Simons

Species salvation at Swanholme Lakes
11 October 2010
Natural England’s SSSI Adviser, Dr Kate Fagan, said: “I am really excited to see what germinates when the rhododendron is removed.
It is likely that seeds from the heathland plants are still present and viable
and are just waiting for their chance to germinate under the blanket of rhododendron.
Ruth Simons (Head Conservation Ranger HCP) sent me the two pictures below

Image 1
This picture shows Orange Peel Fungi (Aleuria aurantia) growing with Soft rush (Juncus effusus) on the area that was previously dominated by Rhododendron, we've also recorded new heather plants coming through on that part already so it's very encouraging, one tiny heather plant has even managed to flower.Image 2
The tree stump shows what can develop in place of the tree, fragile plants that wouldn't be there if the trees dominated. There's at least three species of fungi visible as well as Cladonia lichen.

A fourth consecutive win of the
Green Flag for
Hartsholme Country Park...
Hartsholme Country Park receives Green Flag Award...
Date published: 25th July 2011Lincoln’s very own ‘green jewel’, Hartsholme Country Park, has been officially rated as one of the top parks in the country.
On Monday 25 July, Hartsholme Country Park will receive the Green Flag Award for the fourth year running, a sign to visitors that the park is well-maintained and well-managed, with excellent facilities.
Hartsholme is one of a record number of parks and green spaces receiving the Green Flag Award this year, ensuring that even more of us now have access to well-managed, high-quality green spaces.
In 2011, 1,288 parks and green spaces will fly either the Green Flag or Community Award, a sign that the value of green space is widely acknowledged as vital to our communities.
Councillor Donald Nannestad, Portfolio Holder for Recreational Services and Leisure:
This award is testament to the hard work of officers and volunteers who work together to ensure Hartsholme Country Park is well kept and offers excellent facilities to its visitors. We’re extremely proud to receive this award and we will continue to strive towards improving our parks because we know they are accessible to all and play a crucial role in enhancing the lives of our residents.
Phil Barton, Green Flag Plus Partnership chairman said: I would like to congratulate the council and their partners, who have worked hard throughout the year to keep their parks and green spaces at a high standard and ensure they are pleasant and enjoyable spaces for the whole community.
The Green Flag Award Scheme, and its growth, is essential in driving up the standards of our parks and green spaces.
Access to quality green space is something we all desire and the scheme plays a key role in providing it.
In these challenging financial times it is heartening that the number of Green Flag Awards continue to grow.
As the value of green space and the role it plays in our communities strengthens, we must ensure these high standards remain.
All award-winning sites now have the chance to receive a further award from the Green Flag Plus Partnership, the People’s Choice Award.
This award is voted for by the public, so if you want to see your local park receive a national accolade as the people’s choice, then visit the Green Flag Award website now to register your vote:

"Heron Watch 2011"
Image displayed by kind permission of Peter Skelson RSPB Lincoln Local Branch Heron Watch 2011 was a resounding success this year with over 500 visitors attending over the four weekends.
Below is a copy of a letter sent to
Ruth Simons our
Senior Conservation Ranger
from
Peter Skelson Group Leader
RSPB Lincoln Local Group.
Dear Ruth,
On behalf of the RSPB and the Lincoln Local Group I would like to thank you and your colleagues for your hospitality and help with our ‘Date with Nature’ heron watch at Hartsholme Country Park last month.
We estimate that between 60 and 70 people a day visited the RSPB marquee over the four weekends, making an estimated total of 520 people, which included visitors from as far afield as
Cornwall, Kent, Lancashire, Wiltshire and Midlothian.
We received some excellent feedback and the following are just a few examples of the comments made in our visitor book:
“Fantastic, young herons on the nest. Amazing!”
“My four and seven year old really enjoyed looking at the young herons”
“Brought mum down in wheelchair, made her day.
Heron fed baby with fish while she looked on.”
Nine nests were counted.
The event was very successful, possibly helped by the excellent weather, and visitors to the park had some brilliant views of the herons.
Yours sincerely,
Peter Skelson
Group Leader RSPB Lincoln Local Group
Additional Information from
Alan Flintham RSPB
Lincoln Local Group
The event took place over 4 weekends between 26 March and 17 April
It was organised by the RSPB Lincoln Local Group
It was manned by 19 local volunteers over the 8 days of the event
Herons are now on the increase following bans on the use of certain toxic pesticides and the increase in water quality
Heron numbers on the Hartsholme Lake island have increased from the one occupied nest in 1998 to 13 in 2009, 10 in 2010 and 9 in 2011.
The numbers are very encouraging as prolonged cold weather, as in the last 2 years, impacts upon the number of breeding herons.
